Microsoft’s decision to shut down Ensemble Studios after the completion of Halo Wars was a slightly surprising one. While many thought that was the only game they were working on, a new report by Gamasutra has discovered otherwise as a MMO title based on Halo was also in development.

According to the article, rumblings of this title could be heard as far back as 2006, and as recent as this past June when Ensemble’s Bruce Shelly mentioned it in a blog post, saying they “set up three prototype teams out of the staff of a major project that we cancelled. After six months of very interesting work, we have now stopped two of those prototypes, with one getting more time to demonstrate the value of its concept.”

It apparently didn’t last long, though. The title was scrapped internally sometime last year.
