The latest hardware and software sales numbers for August 2008 have just been released tonight courtesy of the NPD Group. On the hardware side, Nintendo continues its dominance with the sale of 453K Wii units, followed by a whopping 518.3K Nintendo DS units.

Microsoft’s Xbox 360, hot off the heels of a recent price cut, beat the PlayStation 3 for the month of August selling 195.2K units compared to 185.4K units sold from Sony’s console. The PSP had another good month as well, selling 253.K units, with the PlayStation 2 still kicking at 144.1K units.

On the software side, as expected it was a Madden month. The Xbox 360 version led the way with 1 million units sold, followed by the PS3 version at 643K units and the PS2 version with 424.5K units. Rounding out the rest of the top ten is Wii Fit, Mario Kart Wii, the Xbox 360 version of Soul Calibur IV, Too Human, Madden NFL 09 for the Wii, and Guitar Hero: On Tour for the DS.
