An Indiana teacher has begun involving video games in the classroom. While the MSNBC report fails to specify, one can assume he’s using Wii Sports. He uses the game as a math lesson, and to understand how to score in bowling can be one step short of calculus for some people.
The report goes on to estimate games are part of only 1% of classrooms in the country, but interviews Mark Prensky who wants that number to increase.
“Our teachers were taught, and still are taught, to lecture to cover the material,” says Prensky. “Instead of mutual respect, teachers dis the kids, saying games contribute to a short attention span, that they’re a waste of time. That’s not true.”
Back in my day… well, that was a long time ago, but many hours were spent being yelled at to “turn off that Nintendo!” after I snuck my Game Boy out of the house. I almost want to go back. Almost.
