Coming less than a week after reports of a new 60GB Xbox 360 already being in stores, could a price drop for all three of their SKUs be on the way?
According to a report on CNET tonight, possibly. Citing a recent feature article by Ars Technica’s Ben Kuchera, Microsoft is getting ready to drop the prices on all of their Xbox 360 models. The price cut, which could come as soon as September, would see the Arcade (non-hard drive) unit dropping to $199, the new 60GB unit to $299, and the 160GB Elite unit to $399.
If true, the Xbox 360 Arcade System would replace the Nintendo Wii (currently $249) as the cheapest current-gen console and would be the first to reach the $200 price point. Microsoft hasn’t confirmed anything at this point, but with the stealth release of the 60GB model they might not.
With $200 being the prime price point for consoles based on history, it’ll be interesting to see how this shakes out. Stay tuned.
