Signature Services announced this morning that their open source gaming development platform, the Elemental Engine II, is now officially available for download. Capable of creating and editing 3D games in real-time, the engine also covers other other features like GUI, 3D audio, and buit-in networking capabilities for multiplayer games.

“Signature Devices has naturally felt that we needed to give back to the game development community. The Elemental Engine II received an overwhelmingly positive response at this year’s Game Developers Conference and we believe it will become very popular among industry insiders,” stated Kenneth Hurley, CEO of Signature Devices, Inc. and Graffiti Entertainment, LLC.

The engine made one if its first appearances earlier this year at GDC. Could an engine like this possibly make a dent in Microsoft’s plans with the XNA Initiative? Most likely not due to the tremendous platform it has, but there’s no doubt that this will be accessible to a lot more people.
