Marvel Entertainment is looking to increase the quality of their games and gaming catalouge over the next few year, according a report on Variety’s Cut Scene Blog.
Featured in a panel of industry executives last week at the AdAge Madison & Vine Conference, Marvel Entertainment Executive VP of Global Digital Media Ira Rubenstein discussed a number of things that he hopes will improve the quality of Marvel titles.
-He thinks Marvel should start making more games based on its heroes without necessarily tying and timing them to a movie
-When there is a movie, he wants to get to work earlier, even before a script is final. He said he’s telling Sega to get started on the “Thor” and “Avengers” games (based on the movies coming out in 2010) now.
-He thinks Marvel should consider making more downloadable and casual videogames based on its properties.
It’s good to see Marvel acknowledging this after their recent string of disappointing titles. That said, it hasn’t been all bad. Marvel: Ultimate Alliance was a great game, and while we haven’t seen much on Ultimate Alliance 2: Fusion at this point, it looks promising. And it’s way to early to tell on Raven’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine title.
With Spider-Man: Web of Shadows is on the way this year, not tied to any movie, so it looks like they’ve already been putting these thoughts to work in some fashion. Now let’s get to work on bringing Marvel vs. Capcom 2 to the download services and we’ll be groovy.
