The Nintendo Wii officially took the top spot for total hardware sales in the current generation console race, according to the numbers released tonight by The NPD Group. Moving 666.7K units for the month of June, the Wii has now sold 10.9 million units in the United States, surpassing the Xbox 360 to become the new leader.
As far as the other consoles go, the Nintendo DS finished in second place with 783K units. The PlayStation 3, thanks in large part to the sales of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, moved 405.5K for the month, with the PSP right behind it with 337.4K units sold. The Xbox 360 sold 219.8K, followed by the PlayStation 2 at 188.8K units sold.
On the software side of things, Metal Gear Solid 4 reigned supreme with 774.6K copies sold. One interesting note to mention here is that this doesn’t include sales from the hardware bundles, which would have sold nearly one million according to NPD’s Anita Frazier: “As expected, Metal Gear Solid 4 realized significant retail sales and drove PS3 hardware acquisition. While the attached media report does not include units bundled with hardware, if included MGS4 sold-through nearly 1 million units.”
Guitar Hero: On Tour for the DS, Ninja Gaiden II on the Xbox 360, Wii Fit w/ Balance Board for the Wii, and Wii Play w/ Wii Remote rounded out the top five software sales. Company reactions, as well as the complete software list for June, can be found below.
Sony (Jack Tretton, president and CEO, Sony Computer Entertainment America):
“The PlayStation brand is truly hitting its stride on its long-term opportunity across all three platforms. Our strong June numbers serve as proof to the continued momentum of the PS3 and affirms that we’re exactly where we expected to be.
This month’s success can be attributed to the exclusive blockbuster Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots and we’re poised for continued growth into the back half of the year with a much anticipated line-up, including LittleBigPlanet, SOCOM: Confrontation, Resistance 2, MotorStorm: Pacific Rift, and NBA ’09: The Inside. Additionally, the new PlayStation Network video delivery service will be a big driver for the PS3 and PSP, allowing consumers to extend their multi-media and entertainment experience.”
