A number of new details on Sony Online Entertainment’s upcoming MMO DC Universe were revealed today, thanks to a report in Edge Magazine.
According to Jim Lee, comic book icon and the game’s executive creative director, the game will be a “kick-ass hybrid between a traditional MMO and a first-person action console game”.
Taking up a model many other licensed MMOs are known for, DC Universe won’t allow you to control any of their characters, but you’ll have a number of chances for your created character to interact with them. Specific examples used in the article were Superman saving Lex Luthor from attacking him with a shard of Kryptonite.

And speaking of Supes, his hometown of Metropolis and Batman’s native Gotham City were also revealed as locales, which will all emphasize fast-paced action instead of grinding.
Perhaps some of the best news out of all of this (at least to me) is that future properties from these games could wind up in other DC Comics properties and vice-versa, and there are early plans to cross-over the two.
“We can tie-in future DC tentpole events and translate the stories for the gaming world, and have them occur simultaneously,” said Lee. “The possibilities are numerous and very exciting.” - Jim Lee
With the Blackest Night Green Lantern stories and the ongoing Legion of Superheroes arcs, not even to mention recent stories like 52, this could definitely get interesting. Marvel Universe Online promised many of the same things, but with that gone, most comic fans will be chomping at the bit to play this when it arrives.
