After weeks of internet speculation and rumors, the latest issue of Nintendo Power Magazine has confirmed that Mega Man 9 is indeed in development and on the way. In a bit of an unexpected twist though, the title will release for Nintendo’s WiiWare service and be styled just like the old NES versions.

And when I say just like, I mean “just like”. In an interview with the mag, creator Kenji Inafune cites the recent rise of interest in retro game design, and that’s what ultimately led him and his team to take this direction with the game. Scans for the mag have started to pop up as well, so you can judge for yourself.

Keep in mind that while this has been confirmed only for WiiWare at this point, there’s no word on this possibly showing up on the PlayStation Store or Xbox Live Marketplace right now.
