The upcoming PC versions of Mass Effect and Spore will no longer require a 10-day SecuROM check online to re-validate, according to a statement made yesterday by Electronic Arts. While the games will still both utilize the DRM service, the only time it will now be required is when you initally install the game or download new content.
The move is a direct response to the gaming community who made it known fairly quickly that they were unhappy with the model. In addition, the games can be installed on up to three computers, with possibly more at the discretion of EA Customer Service reps.
This is the second time in as many months that EA has made a change to an aspect of a game following negative community backlash. Following the strong response to Battlefield: Bad Company initally charging for certain weapons, they eventually decided to make the weapons available for free in both the standard and Gold editions of the game.
